MAS told to cut fares
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): The government has ordered Malaysia
Airlines (MAS) to cut fares between the peninsula and the eastern
states of Sabah and Sarawak, parliament was told Thursday.
Transport Ministry parliamentary secretary Donald Lim said the
aim was to encourage people from the peninsula and the states on
Borneo island to visit each other more often.
He said it would be difficult to charge foreigners and
Malaysians different fares even though many such proposals had
been received. No details were given of the reduction.
The national carrier reported a group net loss of about 700
million ringgit (US$184 million) in the year ending March 1999.
