MAS to buy new planes
SEATTLE, Washington (AFP): Malaysia Airlines plans to order up
to 15 of the Boeing 777-200X, a twin-engine, long-haul carrier
the company is considering developing, Boeing announced here
Thursday.
Malaysia Airlines last year ordered 15 regular 777s from
Boeing and signed a memorandum of understanding on acquiring a
similar number of the new version on March 4.
Speaking at an event March 4, Malaysia Airlines executive
chairman Tan Sri Tajudin Ramli said: "We are very pleased to be
the first customer to announce our intent to purchase the new
777-200X.
"Our market continues to expand significantly and we must plan
today for further developments in the future."
He added that the airline wanted to take advantage of an open
skies accord, currently being negotiated between Malaysia and the
United States, "by providing non-stop capability from Kuala
Lumpur to New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago."
