MAS orders Pratt engines
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia Airlines System Bhd. has sealed an order with Pratt and Whitney of the United States to buy 44 PW 4056 engines for its 10 new Boeing 747-400 series aircraft, reports said yesterday.
The selection of the PW 4056 engines to power its new aircraft reflected Malaysia Airlines' confidence in its capability and outstanding performance, airline managing director Wan Malek Ibrahim was quoted saying in the New Straits Times.
The 10 Boeing 747s would replace the airline's older aircraft under a reflecting program, Wan Malek added.
The national carrier did not reveal the price of the engines. Malaysia Airlines last January ordered 15 B777s and 10 B747-400s, costing 10 billion ringgit (US$4 billion) as part of its fleet modernization and rationalization program.
The B15 777 aircraft are to be powered by Rolls Royce engine Trent 800 engines which Malaysia Airlines ordered from Britain's Rolls-Royce Aerospace Group last August for an estimated $500 million.
