MAS ends Davo flight
DAVAO, Philippines (AFP): The Asian currency crisis has forced the cancellation of the only direct flight between the southern Philippines and nearby Malaysia, it was announced here Saturday.
Malaysia Airlines (MAS) district manager Fadzil Mairon said the twice-weekly Davao to Kota Kinabalu service, which began in November, 1995, would end after the last flight Saturday.
He blamed the declining number of people taking the flight due to the currency crisis, but added that the airline hoped "to re- activate our services in this route once the region recovers economically."
The Philippines has been promoting direct flights between its southern provinces and nearby areas of Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia as part of a campaign to integrate the economies of these areas.
