Marwan Barghouti and Mahmoud Abbas's Son Elected as Members of the Fatah Central Committee
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, RAMALLAH – Yasser Abbas (64), son of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, has been elected as a member of the Fatah Central Committee. This follows Fatah’s first congress in several years.
As reported by Al Arabiya on Sunday (17/5/2026), during the congress, Marwan Barghouti, a leading Fatah figure currently imprisoned in Israel, led the provisional results with the highest number of votes and retained his seat on the central committee. Among other figures, Yasser Abbas also secured a seat on the Fatah Central Committee.
Yasser, who has a background as a businessman, has spent most of his time in Canada. However, five years ago, he was appointed as his father’s representative in Fatah, marking his gradual emergence onto the political scene.
Meanwhile, Jibril Rajoub was re-elected as Secretary-General of the Fatah Central Committee. He has held this position since 2017.
