Marwah Wedding Organiser Couple Scam Targets Brides-to-Be via Social Media Promotions
Police have uncovered the modus operandi of a married couple running Marwah Wedding Organiser (WO), RM and ER. The suspects are alleged to have scammed prospective brides and grooms through social media wedding package promotions.
“Initially, victims encountered wedding service advertisements on Instagram. They then became interested and proceeded to communicate directly with the admin via WhatsApp,” said East Jakarta Metro Police Criminal Investigation Unit Chief AKP Bayu Kurniawan, according to Antara, Monday, 1 June 2026.
Prospective couples interested in the suspects’ advertisements continued communication via WhatsApp. Bayu stated that during these chats, the suspects offered various attractive wedding package promotions.
“It was during WhatsApp communications that the suspects presented promotional offers for wedding packages to the victims,” Bayu added.
Police are still investigating the case, including the possibility of additional victims outside East Jakarta. Investigators have identified several victims from Bekasi.
Regarding reports from Bekasi victims, Bayu said his office will coordinate with local law enforcement. He added that if local police handle the reports, investigations can be conducted in coordination.
“If victims in Bekasi file reports, investigators there will coordinate with us regarding the case handling. If Bekasi investigators wish to question the suspects we have detained, we will allow it,” Bayu explained.
Bayu urged the public to be more selective and cautious before hiring wedding organisers, advising prospective couples to verify the legitimacy and track record of WOs before making payments.
“On this occasion, the East Jakarta Metro Police Criminal Investigation Unit urges the public to exercise caution when choosing wedding organisers. Ensure the WO is properly verified and has a good track record,” Bayu said.
Additionally, the public is warned to be wary of wedding packages priced significantly below market rates. Bayu stated that unusually low offers should be suspected as a scam tactic to lure victims.
“Also, check if the package prices are reasonable. If they’re too cheap, don’t rush to believe them as it could be a scam,” Bayu added.
RM and ER were arrested in West Bandung. Both have been named suspects and detained by police. They face charges under KUHP Articles 492 and 486.
“They are suspects,” said East Jakarta Metro Police Chief Commissioner Alfian Nurrizal when contacted on Sunday, 31 May.
The suspects failed to fulfil their obligations as wedding organisers per agreements with victims. Police are continuing their investigation.
A total of 58 prospective couples have fallen victim to the WO owner’s scam, with estimated losses of Rp 2.6 billion.
