Marunda Pedestrian Bridge Repeatedly Hit by Containers, Lift Disabled and Glass Shattered
JAKARTA — The Marunda Pedestrian Bridge (JPO) in North Jakarta has once again been damaged after being struck by a heavy vehicle. Located on an arterial route with container truck traffic, this facility, built with a budget of billions of rupiah, has been recorded as damaged repeatedly, including in 2024 and again in 2026. At the end of 2023, when the JPO was newly constructed with funds of around Rp 15.5 billion, the facility was damaged after being hit by a container truck on Saturday morning (6/4/2024). The incident caused one lift lobby to be damaged, the roof to sag though not collapse, and the lift-side lobby glass to crack. Additionally, the road barriers and JPO fencing were also destroyed due to the container impact. However, the repairs at that time were covered by the trucking company that caused the collision, so the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI) did not incur costs. The shattered glass was covered with a white banner reading “Sorry, under repair”. Marunda JPO Lift Operator Muhammad Taufat (49) said the lift lobby glass breakage was caused by a container truck attempting to turn around. “It was because the container was turning around. So, the container turned around too close to the pavement, so its tail hit (the glass),” Taufat told Kompas.com at the location on Thursday (23/4/2026). The incident occurred in March 2026. Taufat said he had reported the damaged bridge condition to the DKI Jakarta Public Works Department. “The damage has been since last Ramadan. Hit by rain splashes. If there’s heavy rain, windy rain, it definitely errors because it mostly uses sensors,” Taufat added. The lift was actually repaired by Public Works officers but has broken again and cannot be used until now. Head of Data and Information Centre of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Public Works Department Siti Dinarwenny said the deactivation of the Marunda JPO lift was due to an accident. “Regarding the condition of the Marunda JPO lift, we can state that the lift facility has been temporarily deactivated due to damage caused by a collision with a large-sized load vehicle, which occurred when the vehicle turned around not in the proper location,” she stated in a written explanation received by Kompas.com on Thursday.
