Ma'ruf Amin on Failed US-Iran Negotiations: There Are Hidden Interests
“If there are no interests, the interest would be for the good of all, and that failure would not have happened. But if it fails, it means there are hidden interests,” said Ma’ruf after attending the Halal Bihalal of the Nahdlatul Ulama Student Association (IPNU) in Central Jakarta on Sunday (12/4/2026).
Ma’ruf assessed that the intentions of the involved countries in the negotiations were not sincere in seeking solutions. Countries in conflict should realise the impact of war on everyone, he said.
“Not sincerely seeking solutions or peace. Whereas this war troubles everyone, brings destruction to all sectors, and affects all countries,” he stated.
Ma’ruf said the impact of the war would be felt globally. Indonesian society is urged to prepare to face its effects.
“Yes, Indonesia will definitely be affected. But like it or not, we must be ready to face whatever impacts occur,” he remarked.
It is known that the negotiations between Iran and the United States (US), initiated by Pakistan, have failed. According to Al-Jazeera and CNN on Sunday (12/4/2026), the talks were held by the two warring countries during a two-week ceasefire. The US delegation was led by Vice President JD Vance.
Meanwhile, the Iranian delegation was led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. The negotiations began on Saturday (11/4).
After 21 hours, the marathon negotiations officially ended without any agreement. Vance said the marathon talks discussed various issues.
“We’ve done it for 21 hours, and we’ve had a number of substantive discussions with the Iranian side. That’s the good news,” Vance said at a press conference in Islamabad.
