Martial law in Aceh
Martial law in Aceh
From Media Indonesia
The security situation in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province is now relatively under control thanks to the hard work of the security agencies in eradicating the armed separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) since the start of martial law there.
However, it is not time yet to revoke martial law as members of GAM are still hiding in the jungles.
Aceh province needs specially treatment, and until GAM is completely routed, martial law must remain. Otherwise, there will be continuing attempts to destroy the unity of the country and create chaos during the 2004 elections. All activities that are injurious to the unity of the nation must be foiled.
The military operation in Aceh can be relaxed only when the leaders of GAM have been arrested -- dead or alive. The efforts that the government, the military and the police have been making to restore security and order in Aceh must not be rendered useless simply because some people disagree with martial law there.
