Marketplace Tax Could Be Postponed Again, Purbaya Explains
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has opened the possibility of further postponing the implementation of Income Tax Article 22 collection on transactions through marketplace platforms. Purbaya explained to journalists at the Ministry of Finance office in Jakarta on Wednesday that the application of this tax will consider national economic conditions and public purchasing power.
The marketplace tax collection was originally scheduled to take effect on 1 August 2026. However, on 5 August 2026, Purbaya announced that the government had delayed the policy’s implementation.
“My priority is to postpone it first. We will see what the situation is like, our economic conditions and the public. If it could be postponed before, then if conditions are poor we can postpone it again. But for now, it is delayed until October,” Purbaya said.
According to Purbaya, the government’s decision to delay the marketplace tax aims to give the public time to increase their income capacity so they have adequate capital for spending.
He noted that national economic growth is currently showing relatively stable development at 5.29 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026. Purbaya stated he would push for economic growth to reach 6 percent year-on-year by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Taxes at the Ministry of Finance previously stated that Income Tax Article 22 that has been collected by marketplaces from domestic merchants in connection with previously issued appointments will be returned by the marketplace to the domestic merchants.
The enforcement of Minister of Finance Regulation Number 37 of 2025, which serves as the legal umbrella for the marketplace tax proposal, has been postponed until 31 October 2026. The collection of Income Tax Article 22 based on this regulation will commence on 1 November 2026.
Consequently, the Director General of Taxes’ decree regarding the appointment of marketplaces as collectors of Income Tax Article 22 that has been issued will be revoked and a new appointment will be made.
