Market vendors under pressure

From Bisnis Indonesia

There have recently been reports that dozens of traditional
markets will be closed down. Strangely, president director of PD
Pasar Jaya, a company under the Jakarta provincial administration
assigned to manage traditional markets in Jakarta, has raised the
operational fee.

In Pasar Citra Garden, for example, the fee imposed on a kiosk
owner has been raised from Rp 3,000 daily to Rp 18,000 a day.
Vendors selling vegetables and fresh fish have to pay a fee three
times as much as before. Although the kiosk owners and the
vendors in this market regularly pay a fee to PD Pasar Jaya, the
market, which has been built by Citra Garden real estate
developer as part of the facilities of the real estate, has never
been renovated.

Raised fees will cause bankruptcy on the part of small-scale
vendors in the market. PD Pasar Jaya must find other ways to
collect money, for example, raising the parking fees or selling
advertising space in the market.
