Market space

From Neraca

Jakarta has dozens of new markets built under the Presidential
Aid Scheme (Inpres), but still they fail to accommodate sidewalk
vendors.

A case in point is the market in the Senen area of Central
Jakarta. Sidewalk vendors increased after the opening of the
market.

The same happened with the opening of the market in Pasar
Minggu in South Jakarta. I wonder if the Jakarta market
authority, PD Pasar Jaya, has ever conducted a survey on this
phenomenon.

This has led me to another question: whether or not those
traders who moved into the markets were truly former sidewalk
vendors.

This thing really bothers me because I know the reason the
numerous markets were built was precisely to contain sidewalk
vendors.

Furthermore, I know that so many sidewalk vendors are
complaining about the difficulties in obtaining a space in the
those markets because they first have to pay a lot of money. And
money for them is hard to gain because they are small traders.

I can only hope that the market authority will look into this
matter.
