A catastrophic incident occurred at Pasar Sehat Soreang market in Bandung Regency when the market’s ceiling suddenly collapsed and struck people beneath it, resulting in one reported death.

The incident happened on Monday, 16 March 2026. The victim died after being struck by concrete ceiling materials, suffering fatal injuries immediately at the scene. Additionally, three other people sustained injuries from the incident and were immediately taken to hospital.

Agus Diman, a merchant and witness to the incident, reported that the market ceiling had already shown cracks prior to the collapse. As a result of the collapse, 13 merchants’ kiosks were also damaged by falling materials. “The ceiling was already cracked beforehand. Plus there was the flour mill machine causing vibrations. It happened around 12:30 p.m. local time,” said 50-year-old Agus Diman.

Bandung Police Chief Kombes Aldi Subartono stated that the investigation would involve the Criminal Investigation Unit of Bandung Police using scientific methods. Subartono noted that the West Java Regional Police were also providing assistance in the investigation process.

“That’s correct, the Criminal Investigation Unit of Bandung Police is conducting an investigation into this incident given that there has been a fatality,” said Aldi Subartono when met at the scene.

Meanwhile, Bandung Vice Regent Ali Syakieb expressed deep condolences over the incident, particularly given the fatality and serious injuries.

“The latest information I have received indicates one person has died and three others are injured. This is clearly a warning for all of us,” said Ali.
