Mark Zuckerberg's Wealth Plummets by Rp13 Trillion Following Reality Labs' Billions in Losses
Jakarta – Mark Zuckerberg’s wealth has come under the spotlight following a massive loss recorded by Meta Platform Inc’s metaverse business line, Reality Labs, in the first quarter of 2026. This occurred amid ambitious efforts to build a virtual world.
Citing CNBC International, Meta Platform reported that Reality Labs booked an operational loss of US$4.03 billion, or approximately Rp69.4 trillion (based on an exchange rate of Rp17,350 per US dollar). Revenue from this division amounted to US$402 million, equivalent to Rp6.97 trillion.
This loss figure is still better than Wall Street projections, which estimated up to US$4.82 billion. Similarly, Reality Labs’ revenue fell short of analysts’ expectations of US$488.8 million.
The financial pressure on Meta Platform has also drained Zuckerberg’s wealth. According to Forbes Real-Time Billionaires data as of Thursday, 30 April 2026, the Facebook boss’s net worth plunged by 0.33 per cent, or US$752.7 million, approximately Rp13 trillion.
Zuckerberg now ranks fifth on the list of the world’s richest people with a total wealth of around US$229.4 billion. He trails Elon Musk in first place, followed by Larry Page, Jeff Bezos, and Sergey Brin.
Reality Labs is the unit focused on developing virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and wearable device technologies. Since its launch at the end of 2020, the division has accumulated losses exceeding US$80 billion, reflecting Meta’s substantial investments in building the metaverse ecosystem.
The direction of this business has faced challenges since the boom in generative AI technology triggered by the arrival of ChatGPT at the end of 2022. Since then, Meta has been considered to be lagging behind competitors such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in artificial intelligence development.
To catch up on this lag, Meta is now shifting its investment focus to AI infrastructure, new model development, and AI-based services. This step is taken as a strategy to remain competitive amid rapid changes in the technology industry.
Reality Labs is also implementing budget tightening measures as a business strategy for the company to balance innovation and profitability pressures.
