Mark Zuckerberg Admits Meta's AI Agent Development Falls Short of Expectations

Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged that the development of artificial intelligence agents at his company has not progressed as quickly as executives had previously hoped. As reported by Tech Crunch on Thursday (2/6) local time, Zuckerberg made the remarks during an internal company meeting. An AI agent is an AI system capable of understanding instructions, formulating plans, and completing tasks autonomously on a user’s command. According to him, the development of AI agents at Meta has not shown the acceleration of progress that was previously projected. The statement was made several months after Meta laid off approximately 8,000 employees, or about 10 per cent of its workforce. In addition to the staff reductions, Meta also transferred around 7,000 employees to various AI divisions, including a team known as Agent Transformation. He said the move was taken because senior company officials were concerned that Meta was not moving quickly enough to adapt to the rapidly changing landscape of the technology industry. Zuckerberg also mentioned that the expected benefits of the new AI-focused organisational structure have not yet fully materialised. Nevertheless, he is optimistic that the results of the company’s investment and reorganisation will begin to show a positive impact within the next three to six months. Several previous reports have also described the newly formed AI team at Meta as a high-pressure work environment, based on testimonies from several engineers placed in the division. Meta has been one of the most aggressive technology companies investing in the AI sector in recent years. The tech giant is reportedly pouring up to 145 billion US dollars, equivalent to Rp2,601 trillion, into AI infrastructure this year.
