Marines distribute flags on Sebatik Island ahead of 81st Independence Day

The Indonesian Marine Corps has distributed Red and White flags to residents on Sebatik Island, Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan, in the lead-up to the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s independence. Marines went door-to-door and also gave flags to passing motorists and fishermen. “We distributed flags to every home. Vehicles passing by were also given flags so that the community can join in enlivening the Independence Day commemoration,” said Captain Ahmad Rizwan, commander of the Outer Island Security Task Force XXX. He noted that the activity aims to cultivate a sense of patriotism, particularly among citizens living in the border region. Various social activities and competitions are also planned to foster togetherness between the soldiers and the local community. A volleyball court and football pitch located directly in front of the command headquarters will serve as the centre of community activities. “We plan to hold various competitions together with the community. The goal is to get closer to the residents while celebrating Independence Day,” he said. Rizwan acknowledged that commemorations in border areas face limitations compared to urban centres, but stressed that this does not diminish the people’s enthusiasm. “Perhaps in cities the celebrations are more festive, while here they are simpler. However, the execution remains solemn and full of spirit,” he added. The Marine Corps called on the people of Sebatik Island to continue upholding national unity and strengthening their love for the homeland, even though they reside in a border area directly adjacent to a neighbouring country.
