Mar'ie quits Bank Mandiri

JAKARTA (JP): Former minister of finance Mar'ie Muhammad has resigned from his position as chief commissioner of the newly established Bank Mandiri.

An assistant of the state minister of the empowerment of state enterprises, Sofyan A. Djalil, said on Wednesday that Mar'ie's decision was made after he was appointed a member of the Indonesian Review Committee (IRC), an agency set up by the government, the International Monetary fund and the World Bank to oversee the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency.

"Pak Mar'ie decided to resign from his post as a chief commissioner of Bank Mandiri because his new post in IRC was potentially a conflict of interest with his position in Bank Mandiri," Sofyan said.

"Therefore, the government has appointed Binhadi (former director of Bank Indonesia) to replace Mar'ie," he added.

PT Bank Mandiri was established in October to take over Bank Ekspor Impor Indonesia, Bank Dagang Negara, Bank Bumi Daya and Bank Pembangunan Indonesia (Bapindo), four of the seven state banks. (gis)
