National women's shuttler Maria Kristin gave herself a perfect birthday present on Saturday, beating Fransiska Ratnasari Hari S to win the weeklong Yonex Sunrise Jakarta Open Satellite badminton championship.
After a sluggish start, Kristin, who turned 20 on Saturday, turned the final around to win 2-11, 11-5, 11-2 in Senayan, Central Jakarta.
"I did not expect to win this match," she said after her win.
"I made too many unforced errors in the first game, but I regained my composure in the second and third games."
Fransiska, who was included on the team for the Sudirman Cup mixed team championship in May while Kristin was left off, played aggressively in the first game and did not allow her opponent to develop a rhythm.
In the second, Kristin showed more patience, mixing up drop shots in long rallies to take command.
A tiring Fransiska could provide little resistance in the final game.
In the men's singles final, former national player Jeffer Rosobin outclassed Budi Santoso 15-13, 15-12.
The match was closely contested, with Jeffer making a comeback from 6-11 down in the second game to overcome Budi, who is also a former member of the national team.
Budi's game also felt apart in the crucial final points when he was upset by an umpiring decision.
"I was prepared to play a third game, but I just tried to speed up the pace when I was behind in the second. Luckily, Budi was also faulted by the umpire when I took a 13-12 lead, which made him upset. Afterward, it was easy for me to end the match."
In men's doubles, Agung/Enroe won the title after defeating Yoga Ukikasah/Yonathan Suryatama 15-8, 15-5.
In women's doubles, Rintan/Rani Mundiasti clinched the championship title with a 7-15, 15-12, 15-3 win over Purwati and Meilina Jauhari.
Indian mixed doubles pair Diju V/Jwala Gutta stole the mixed doubles title by overcoming Vietnamese doubles pair Tran Thanh Hai/Ngo Hai Van 15-1, 15-3.
