Marcell Siahaan promotes understanding of music and song copyright in Riau

Pekanbaru (ANTARA) - Singer and Commissioner of the National Collective Management Institute (LMKN) Marcell Siahaan provided education on improving understanding of music and song copyright for creative individuals at an event organised by the Riau Regional Office of the Ministry of Law.

Marcell stated in Pekanbaru on Thursday that Law Number 28 of 2014 on Copyright was created to maintain a balance between creators and the public once a work is published. Copyright is an exclusive right that arises automatically based on a declaratory principle.

“After it is announced, public consequences will emerge and exploitation is also possible. This needs to be protected so that the work is appreciated, please use it but there are rights that must be safeguarded when it is played,” he said.

Furthermore, economic rights also cover adaptation, arrangement, or transformation of a work, distribution of the work or its copies, performance of the work, announcement of the work, communication of the work, and rental of the work.

He said in that context, LMKN works on the performance of works, announcement of works, and communication of works. For performances such as concerts, the organiser must pay LMKN and only the creator receives royalties.

Similarly, for the communication of works via digital platform media that play songs, royalties in this case are also obtained by the creator, singer, and producer.

In addition to economic rights, there are also moral rights in copyright that are eternally attached to the creator. This right serves to ensure the creator’s name remains attributed to their work. Moral rights also grant the creator the authority to maintain the integrity of their creation, even if the economic rights to the work have been transferred to another party.
