Marathon training kicks off
Marathon training kicks off
JAKARTA: Training for the Chicago Marathon in the Far East
started at 5 a.m. on Tuesday.
The first day of training, in which nine people participated,
was a three-mile run in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.
Training is held every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday
and Sunday leading up to the Oct. 12 marathon. Saturday training
is a cross-country run.
To attract more runners, the organizers have decided to go
back to basics with training starts with three-mile runs that
gradually increase as the weeks go by.
The marathon takes place along the coastal road from Labuan to
Anyer, Banten, on the same day as the actual Chicago Marathon is
staged in the U.S.

Padilla leads Phillies to victory
ANAHEIM, California: Vincente Padilla threw seven shutout
innings as Jimmy Rollins and Jim Thome both homered to lead the
Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-0 win over the Anaheim Angels in the
only major league baseball game on Monday.
Padilla (5-7) allowed just five hits, struck out two and
walked one to help the Phillies win the first-ever meeting
between the two teams in interleague play.
It was not a good night for Anaheim sports fans, as the crowd
of 25,902 groaned loudly when it was announced in the third
inning that the Anaheim Mighty Ducks had lost Game Seven of the
Stanley Cup finals to the New Jersey Devils, by the same 3-0
score. --Reuters

Berlusconi talks Beckham in Israel
ROME: Italian Premier and AC Milan President Silvio Berlusconi
found time amid talks with Israel's prime minister Monday to
address the hottest issue of the summer's soccer market: David
Beckham.
Sports pages have been full of rumors that the England captain
might leave Manchester United for a Spanish or Italian club -
with Berlusconi's Milan among them. But the Italian leader seemed
to nix that idea during a news conference in Jerusalem with
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
"I know better ways to spend money earned with great sacrifice
than by signing Mr. Beckham," Berlusconi said, according to the
Ap.Biscom news agency. --AP

Ahn released from military service
SEOUL: South Korea's star striker Ahn Jung-Hwan, undergoing
military service, has been given a special dispensation to play
in Wednesday's friendly international against Argentina.
The Japan-based star whose familiar flowing locks were shorn
when he began a one-month stint at barracks near Seoul a week ago
will be released from his unit to join Tuesday training with the
national squad.
Ahn, 27, scored the only goal in South Korea's victory over
Japan on May 31 in Tokyo and was sorely missed in the 2-0 defeat
to Uruguay in Seoul on Sunday.
South Korean fans beseiged the Defense Ministry website
following the defeat, begging that Ahn be released to face
Argentina. --AFP
