In the modern era, rapid technological development and lifestyle changes have given rise to new issues within society. Under these conditions, Islam offers a guiding concept for facing the changing times, known as Maqashid Syariah. This concept explains that every law established in Islam has a clear purpose: to provide benefit and safeguard the welfare of humanity. Simply put, Maqashid Syariah can be understood as the objectives or wisdom behind the establishment of Islamic law. Syariah does not merely contain rules about what is permissible and forbidden, but also aims to improve human life in religious, social, and economic aspects. Scholars explain that there are five main objectives within Maqashid Syariah. First, the preservation of religion (hifz ad-din), which grants Muslims the freedom to perform worship and maintain their faith. Second, the preservation of life (hifz an-nafs), meaning Islam highly values human life and prohibits all forms of action that could endanger or take a person’s life. The third objective is the preservation of intellect (hifz al-’aql). Islam encourages its followers to seek knowledge and develop understanding, while prohibiting anything that can damage the mind, such as alcohol and narcotics. Next is the preservation of lineage (hifz an-nasl), which involves safeguarding family honour through lawful marriage and providing a good education to the next generation. The final objective is the preservation of wealth (hifz al-mal), which protects an individual’s property rights and forbids acts such as theft, fraud, usury, and corruption. In daily life, the concept of Maqashid Syariah is closely related to common activities. For instance, obeying traffic regulations is a form of preserving life, studying diligently is an effort to preserve the intellect, and working honestly without taking the rights of others is a form of preserving wealth. These simple matters show that the values of Maqashid Syariah can be applied in various aspects of life. Furthermore, Maqashid Syariah plays an important role in addressing various modern challenges. In the economic field, for example, its principles encourage the creation of a financial system that is fair, transparent, and does not harm any party. In the field of information technology, this concept teaches that technological progress should be used for positive purposes, such as seeking knowledge, preaching, and building good communication, rather than spreading false or harmful information. From this discussion, it can be understood that Maqashid Syariah is not merely a theory in the study of Islamic law, but also a guide for living. By understanding the purpose behind each law, a person not only knows the rules to be obeyed but also comprehends the wisdom and benefits behind them. Therefore, Maqashid Syariah remains relevant in various aspects of life because its main goal is to create welfare, justice, and prosperity for all humanity.
