Jakarta, VIVA – The national automotive industry has begun 2026 with a fairly promising performance for business players. Based on the latest data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), total motor vehicle sales in January reached 66,936 units.

This achievement indicates a healthy growth trend compared with the same period last year. The market recorded a year-on-year increase of 4.5 per cent, with an additional volume of 2,860 units. This annual rise serves as a strong signal that public purchasing interest in new vehicles remains well maintained. Authorised brand agents have been highly active in presenting attractive programmes to welcome a productive start to the year.

Compared with December 2025, which recorded 93,833 units, the January figure experienced a very normal cyclical adjustment. The monthly decline of 28.7 per cent represents routine market dynamics that typically occur following the peak end-of-year spending period.

Interestingly, several automotive brands recorded extraordinary percentage surges at the start of this year compared with January last year. VinFast led the growth with an increase of 403.6 per cent, followed by Aion, which grew by 329.9 per cent. Great Wall Motor (GWM) also demonstrated highly impressive performance with year-on-year growth of 210.3 per cent in the domestic market.

Additionally, BYD (Bring Your Dream), which focuses on electrified vehicles, successfully recorded a volume increase of 150.3 per cent, reinforcing the penetration of new brands in Indonesia.

This broad-based growth across various segments provides strong optimism for the sustainability of the national automotive ecosystem throughout the current year. Consumers now have a wider selection of models suited to their needs and latest technology preferences.

The retail sales data reflects unit distribution reaching consumers directly across all regions of Indonesia. Successfully maintaining figures above 60,000 units in January represents a solid foundation for the first quarter.
