Many parks change functions

JAKARTA (JP): The head of West Jakarta's public parks office, Abuhair, said on Thursday that his office was having difficulty handling many of the city's resources because they were managed by other agencies.

He said a lot of public parks which originally belonged to the city administration were being managed by other institutions and had been turned into golf courses, office buildings, security posts, sports fields and sub-district offices, Antara reported.

Abuhair said for the 1994/1995 fiscal year his office had received a budget of Rp 800 million (about US$350,000) to care for 42 parks in the mayoralty.

He said West Jakarta had originally had 119 parks, but that now there were only 42 because the other 77 were being used for other purposes and under the management of different agencies.(bas)
