Many New Car Models Fail Type Approval Tests
The type approval process is a critical stage before motor vehicles can be marketed in Indonesia. Through this testing, the government ensures that every vehicle sold meets applicable safety, technical, and emission standards. Not all vehicles undergoing type approval are immediately declared successful; in fact, many units fail to meet the testing requirements and must undergo re-testing.
According to Iman, all testing items must be passed for a vehicle to obtain type certification and be officially marketed in Indonesia. “There are 10 items in one unit; for example, a car is tested for emissions and other parameters. It passes only if all items pass; if even one fails, it does not pass. You are given only one opportunity,” said Iman.
He explained that during the type approval process, all parameters must be met by the vehicle. If even a single testing item fails, the vehicle is declared to have failed the type approval. “However, if there are 10 items and 3 items fail, you are given the chance to re-test only those 3 failed items. This is allowed only once,” he added.
He further noted that if the vehicle still fails after the re-test, the entire process must be restarted from the beginning. This means re-testing is only conducted on the previously failed items, but this opportunity is granted only once. If the results still do not meet the standards, the entire type approval process must be repeated from the start. There is no fixed timeframe for this process.
As a matter of information, type approval is a mandatory requirement for new vehicles before mass production or sale to consumers. This regulation is implemented to ensure that vehicles circulating on the roads meet safety and environmentally friendly standards in accordance with government regulations.
