Many motorists still drive the wrong way in Jatinegara, police deploy ETLE handheld devices
Jakarta, KOMPAS.com — The East Jakarta Traffic Unit has deployed Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) handheld devices to deter motorists who drive against the flow on Jalan DI Panjaitan in Jatinegara, East Jakarta. Deputy Head of the East Jakarta Traffic Unit, Commissioner Sunaryo, said on Jalan DI Panjaitan, East Jakarta, on Wednesday (4 March 2026) that both motorcyclists and car drivers who drive against the flow will be stopped and the violations documented as the basis for action. He explained that officers will stop any drivers found violating the flow, and the violation will be documented as the basis for enforcement. Sunaryo added that the unit is also cooperating with the Suku Dinas Perhubungan (Dishub) to anticipate counter-flow violations in the area. “To anticipate counter-flow, and given its close proximity to the Jatinegara District, we are working with Dishub to issue warnings to avoid counter-flow,” he said. Nevertheless, violations remain, particularly among motorcyclists. “There are still a few cases, but among motorcyclists. Some riders may have slipped past monitoring or officers, but we will continue to take action using the handheld devices,” he explained. Earlier, a video showing several cars and motorcycles moving in unison against the flow along Jalan DI Panjaitan in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, circulated on social media. On the Instagram account @lintasjakartaupdate, a car is seen driving against the flow despite residents blocking it. “This is counter-flow, the direction is over there, back up,” the video recorder said. According to Kompas.com observations on Tuesday (3 March 2026) afternoon, there were no cars observed driving in the wrong direction. However, several motorcyclists still rode in the opposite direction. Jalan DI Panjaitan in front of the Jatinegara Kecamatan office was relatively quiet and not heavily traversed by vehicles. Traffic cones were also visible at the location as barriers to deter counter-flow drivers. Kompas.com remains committed to delivering clear, trusted, and balanced facts.
