Gorontalo, (ANTARA News) - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad said the manufacturing industry in Indonesia was declining from year to year.

"In 2008, this sector contributed 27.9 percent to the national economy but in 2009 its contribution dropped to 26.9 percent," the minister said in his lecture at the Gorotalo State University here on Tuesday.

He said that the downward trend in the contribution of the processing industry was a cause for concern because its contribution to the Gross National Product so far was relatively big.

"For this reason, the competitive edge of this industry should be increased in 2010," he added.

He said that increasing the competitive edge of this sector should also serve as an effort to reduce the number of unemployed workers.

The worker absorption capacity of the processing industrial sector was relatively big, reaching 12 million people, the minister said. (*)
