Manila offers new pitch on U.S. deal

MANILA (DPA): The Philippine government said on Wednesday a
controversial defense pact with the United States will improve
the military's capability in protecting maritime resources and
disaster relief missions.

In a statement, the government said the Visiting Forces
Agreement (VFA) will not only pave the way for joint military
exercises on defense and warfare, but also training programs on
maritime patrol and surveillance and rescue operations during
calamities.

The statement added the government "will also be able to
acquire new techniques and technology in protecting abundant
marine resources and fish sanctuaries once the Senate decides to
ratify the VFA".

The 24-member senate is scheduled to complete on Thursday a
series of public hearings on the VFA, which provides legal
protection for American troops accused of committing a crime
while on assignment in the Philippines.
