MANILA (AFP): At least 15 percent of Metropolitan Manila was
flooded on Friday after almost three days of continuous monsoon
rains, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said.
Floods in the largely industrial suburbs of Navotas and
Malabon reached as high as 91 centimeters, causing massive
traffic jams and prompting authorities to cancel all school
classes for the day. There were no reports of any casualties.
Disaster control officials said that a number of families were
being evacuated from the flooded areas with rubber boats being
sent to help.
Floods were also recorded in provinces north of Manila,
rendering some highways impassable, the authorities added.
At least 10 percent of Metropolitan Manila is below sea level
and is prone to flooding when it rains heavily during high tides.
