Manhole covers go missing

TANGERANG: Hundreds of manhole covers in Tangerang went missing, the open manholes posing a danger to pedestrians.

Mayor MH Thamrin said on Friday that the thieves had stolen the covers, made of concrete with iron bars, because the iron had a high resale value.

He said that his administration would have no option but to fabricate new covers to replace the missing ones. They would cost Rp 750,000 per cover, measuring 60 centimeters (cm) by 150 cm.

About 280 covers have so far been stolen from different locations, including Jl. Daan Mogot, Jl. Dalimabeja, Jl. Moch. Toha, Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Hasyim Asyhari.

The thieves operated at night in badly lit areas.--Antara
