Mangrove Planting Becomes Symbol of Environmental Commitment
The expanse of mangroves along the Kesambi Beach coast in Indramayu Regency marked the conclusion of the World Environment Day 2026 series. The moment was highlighted by mangrove planting activities and the signing of the official report for the completion of the North Java Coast Mangrove Restoration Programme (REMAJA).
The REMAJA programme, executed by PHE ONWJ, has planted 12,500 mangroves along with supporting plants in the coastal area of Indramayu. Meanwhile, PHE OSES held a Waste Awareness workshop providing education on waste management, ranging from composting, utilising used cooking oil for aromatherapy, making biopore holes, to planting indoor greenery.
Elsewhere, Pertamina EP’s West Java region presented the ‘Second Life: From Coverall to Value’ programme, which transforms used work clothes into useful products as a form of circular economy implementation. Various other activities, such as sustainability-themed competitions, were also held involving employees, business partners, and environmental communities.
The closing ceremony was centred at Kesambi Beach and attended by management, local government, and relevant stakeholders, including the West Java Provincial Forestry Service and the Indramayu Regency Government.
Pertamina Upstream Subholding Regional Java Director, Rachmat Hidajat, affirmed that environmental conservation is an inseparable part of the company’s operational sustainability. He assessed that mangrove planting holds significant long-term value.
‘The mangrove planting we are doing today is not merely a ceremonial activity, but an investment for the future. Through the various sustainability programmes we run, we want to ensure that the company’s operations can run in harmony with efforts to protect the environment while providing tangible benefits to the communities around our operational areas,’ he stated on Monday (6/7).
Senior Manager of HSSE for the Java Region, Sigit Isbiantoro, stressed that the momentum of World Environment Day should strengthen a culture of environmental awareness in the workplace.
‘Through the series of activities for World Environment Day 2026, we aim to build a culture of environmental care through education, innovation, and real action. We hope this spirit will not only be present during the commemoration of World Environment Day but will also become part of our work culture and be applied in daily activities,’ he said.
From the local government, Head of the West Java Provincial Forestry Service, Dodit Ardian Pancapana, appreciated the collaboration of various parties in preserving the environment. He emphasised that planting trees is an investment for future generations.
‘The commemoration of World Environment Day reminds us that every tree planted is an investment for the future of the nation and future generations. We hope this momentum can encourage more collaboration in land rehabilitation and tree planting as a joint effort to preserve the environment,’ he added.
This series of activities served as the culmination of the 2026 World Environment Day commemoration, which had been ongoing throughout June. Various educational programmes, innovations, and environmental actions were held across the company’s operational areas involving employees, business partners, the government, communities, and the public.
Carrying the global theme ‘Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future’ and the national theme ‘Working for the Climate’, all activities were directed at encouraging active participation from various parties in protecting the environment. A number of initiatives were carried out, starting from a webinar on waste sorting from the source to various real actions in each subsidiary.
Through this series of events, the company reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Cross-sector collaboration is expected to continue to safeguard environmental resilience, address climate change, and ensure sustainability for future generations.
