Manggarai Brawl Was Sparked by Firecracker Provocation
A brawl broke out near Manggarai Station in Tebet, South Jakarta, yesterday. Police arrested six people.
“Six people have been detained so far; we will investigate further,” South Jakarta Metro Police Chief Commissioner I Putu Yuni Setiawan said, Antara reported on Monday (19 October 2026).
Yuni said the brawl began after several groups of young people provoked one another with firecrackers. The incident did not last long, as police, military personnel and municipal public order officers arrived at the scene.
He said there had been a disturbance, but it was quickly brought under control. There were no injuries or fatalities, and traffic in both directions was reported to be flowing normally after the brawl.
“Follow-up measures are now being carried out. We hope incidents like this will not happen again,” he said.
Police and the three-pillar local administration also plan to add monitoring posts, in collaboration with community leaders.
A clash between groups of young people near Manggarai Station in Tebet, South Jakarta, was triggered by firecrackers being thrown at one another and culminated in the burning of a kiosk on Sunday (18 October).
Joint security post
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung criticised the brawl between groups of young people in Manggarai, which led to a food stall being set on fire. As a preventive measure, the Jakarta provincial government, military, police and local young people agreed to establish a joint security post.
“Yesterday, the police, the military and the Jakarta regional government agreed with the young people to set up a joint post,” Pramono said in Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Monday (19 October).
“I support this, and hopefully it will help prevent further brawls in the area,” he added.
