Mandiri Jogja Marathon Drives 7.4 Percent Increase in Yogyakarta Spending
Bank Mandiri has reported that the Mandiri Jogja Marathon (MJM) 2026 drove a 7.4 percent increase in public spending in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) during the week of the event. Corporate Secretary Adhika Vista stated that the sport tourism event not only served as an athletic competition but also stimulated regional economic activity through heightened consumption, tourism, and the empowerment of local businesses. “Embracing the spirit of ‘More Than a Race’, the Mandiri Jogja Marathon is not just an international-class sporting event, but also a platform that creates tangible economic impact,” Adhika said in an official statement received in Jakarta on Monday. According to research by the Mandiri Institute, total public spending in Yogyakarta during the MJM 2026 week, held from 15 to 21 June 2026, rose by 7.4 percent compared to the average period before the event. This growth was higher than the 4.6 percent increase recorded during the MJM 2025. Bank Mandiri noted that Yogyakarta recorded the highest spending growth compared to several other major cities in Java during the same period. The increase in DIY was approximately 1.2 to 4.1 times higher than in Bandung, Semarang, Jakarta, and Surabaya. Adhika explained that the event boosted the mobility of both residents and tourists, which in turn spurred economic activity across various sectors, including accommodation, transportation, culinary, and trade. Prior to the event, average weekly spending growth in Yogyakarta was around 0.5 percent week-on-week, even during the school holiday period. During the MJM 2026 week, spending growth accelerated to 7.3 percent week-on-week, marking the highest acceleration in the last four years since 2023. Adhika affirmed that the company will continue to present various initiatives that support the development of national sport tourism while strengthening regional economic growth through collaboration with multiple stakeholders. “Through collaboration with various stakeholders, we hope the Mandiri Jogja Marathon can continue to provide broader benefits, both in supporting the development of sport tourism and in driving the economic activity of local communities,” he concluded.
