Mandiri Jogja Marathon 2026 Set to Host 10,200 Runners from 17 Countries and Boost Yogyakarta's Economy
Bank Mandiri is set to host its flagship sport tourism event, the Mandiri Jogja Marathon (MJM) 2026, on Sunday, 21 June 2026. Centred around the Prambanan Temple area in Yogyakarta, this year’s edition carries the theme ‘More Than a Race’, blending an international-standard running competition with tourism, cultural celebration, social impact, and a journey through Yogyakarta’s scenic beauty. The event has recorded its largest participation since its 2017 inception, with 10,200 runners from 17 countries taking part. The competition features four main categories: Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.097 km), 10K, and 5K Fun Run. All race routes are certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), and participants will receive race packs containing a BIB number, jersey, and finisher medal, with Half Marathon and Marathon runners also receiving a finisher tee. Corporate Secretary of Bank Mandiri, Adhika Vista, stated that MJM 2026 serves as a platform to strengthen the grassroots economy while delivering added value to the community and regional economy. ‘MJM is an integrated synergy between Bank Mandiri, communities, MSMEs, and the local government. We want every runner’s step to have a real impact on the environment and society, so MJM truly embodies More Than a Race,’ he said during a press conference in Yogyakarta on Thursday (18/6). Research from the Mandiri Institute indicates a significant economic impact, consistently boosting purchasing power for three consecutive years. During the 2025 event, weekly spending in the Special Region of Yogyakarta surged by 11.6%, far exceeding the normal average weekly growth of 0.8%. Monthly spending growth reached 7%, the highest among all monitored provinces and triple the average for a typical month. This economic uplift directly benefited the tourism sector and its derivatives, with 2025 data showing a 21.9% increase in transport, 10.1% in restaurants and culinary, 6.4% in hospitality, and 5.6% in travel spending compared to the previous year. Head of the Yogyakarta Tourism Office, Imam Pratanadi, praised the event’s consistency since 2017, noting that Bank Mandiri not only organises a marathon but also a series of accompanying events that impact the local economy and social fabric. ‘MJM has proven that Jogja can host sport tourism,’ he said, positioning the region as a premier international sport tourism destination. Race Director Pandu Bagus Buntaran from iSport explained that the route is designed to pass through Yogyakarta’s cultural landmarks, including Plaosan Temple, Taruna Monument, and traditional villages, with the finisher medal featuring the UNESCO-recognised Panggung Krapyak. Visa Indonesia’s Corporate Communication, Astri Abyanti, highlighted that sport tourism not only attracts visits but also creates significant local economic circulation, from MSMEs to the tourism sector, with Visa ensuring seamless and secure payment interactions. To guarantee safety, Bank Mandiri has partnered with AXA Mandiri Financial Services to provide personal accident insurance with total coverage of Rp100 billion for all 10,200 runners. Additionally, customers and prospective customers can enjoy discounts of up to 50% and an extra 30 Livin’poin at over 1,000 merchants across Yogyakarta, from transport hubs to iconic culinary centres, throughout June 2026.
