Mandiri Jogja Marathon 2026 Becomes Economic Engine for Yogyakarta
The Mandiri Jogja Marathon (MJM) 2026 has once again demonstrated that a sporting event can have an impact that extends beyond the finish line. Carrying the theme “More Than a Race”, the sport tourism event helped boost public consumption and economic turnover in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) during the week of its implementation.
Based on research by the Mandiri Institute, total public spending in Yogyakarta during the week of MJM 2026 (15-21 June 2026) increased by 7.4 per cent compared to the average period before the event. This growth was an improvement on the 4.6 per cent increase recorded during MJM 2025, reflecting the event’s growing contribution to regional economic activity.
With this achievement, Yogyakarta became the region with the highest spending growth compared to several other major cities in Java during the MJM 2026 period. The increase in public consumption in DIY was recorded at around 1.2 to 4.1 times higher than in Bandung, Semarang, Jakarta, and Surabaya, further strengthening the Mandiri Jogja Marathon’s role as a driver of regional economic activity.
Bank Mandiri Corporate Secretary Adhika Vista said the Mandiri Jogja Marathon is part of the company’s commitment to delivering sustainable added value through the synergy of sports, tourism, and community economic empowerment. This commitment aligns with the spirit of ‘Melayani Sepenuh Hati’ (Serving Wholeheartedly) that Bank Mandiri embodies through various initiatives providing tangible benefits to the community.
“Carrying the spirit of ‘More Than a Race’, the Mandiri Jogja Marathon is not only an international-class sporting event, but also a platform capable of creating real economic impact. We hope this event can strengthen the sport tourism ecosystem while providing broader benefits for the community, business players, and the region,” Adhika said in a statement on Friday (3/7/2026).
The implementation of MJM 2026 boosted the mobility of residents and tourists, which in turn spurred economic activity across various sectors, from accommodation, transportation, and culinary to trade and the MSMEs involved in the series of activities.
This contribution is even more apparent when compared to public consumption conditions before MJM 2026. In the several weeks prior, average weekly spending growth in Yogyakarta was around 0.5 per cent week-on-week (WoW), even though the school holiday period had already begun.
The momentum of the MJM event then became a catalyst for accelerating public consumption. During the event, spending growth increased to 7.3 per cent WoW, marking the highest acceleration in the last four years since 2023. This achievement shows that sport tourism events can provide a significant boost to local economic activity amid global uncertainty.
Adhika further stated that, as part of its commitment to creating shared value, Bank Mandiri will continue to present various initiatives that support the development of national sport tourism while strengthening regional economic growth through sustainable collaboration with various stakeholders.
