Mandiri Jogja Marathon 2026 Becomes a Catalyst for Sport Tourism Revival
The courtyard of Prambanan Temple bore witness to a new chapter in national sports history on Sunday (21/6/2026). The Mandiri Jogja Marathon (MJM) 2026 was officially held on a more massive scale, cementing the Special Region of Yogyakarta’s (DIY) position as a world-class sport tourism epicentre.
This year, MJM recorded its largest number of participants since it was first held in 2017. A total of 10,200 runners from 17 countries took part, traversing a route that combines physical challenges with a strong Javanese cultural narrative.
The magical atmosphere of Prambanan Temple was palpable from 4:00 AM WIB. Before the starting flag was waved, participants were greeted by a parade of palace soldiers (bregada rakyat), a symbol of respect for Yogyakarta’s enduring traditions amidst modernity. The release of participants was carried out in stages to ensure the comfort and safety of the runners.
The MJM 2026 route has received certification from the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). The course was specifically designed to trace historical footprints, passing through the grandeur of Plaosan Temple, the Taruna Monument, and stretches of lush green rice fields and traditional villages. As a form of appreciation, this year’s finisher medal features the Panggung Krapyak icon, part of the Philosophical Axis of Yogyakarta which has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
“Sport tourism not only makes people healthier but also drives economic growth. With the cultural strength and destinations that Yogyakarta possesses, activities like this serve as a lever for tourist visits while creating new sources of economic growth.”
The presence of more than ten thousand runners and their companions provided an instant impact on the local economy. Based on historical data from the Mandiri Institute at the 2025 event, community spending activity was boosted by up to 11.6 per cent during the event week. With the surge in participants this year, that figure is projected to increase significantly.
Head of the DIY Tourism Office, Imam Pratanadi, affirmed that MJM has become an effective promotional showcase for the region. “This event is able to increase hotel occupancy rates, extend the length of stay for tourists, and drive transactions for local MSME products and culinary businesses,” he explained.
