RS Mandaya Royal Puri in Tangerang City, Banten, has introduced the latest fifth-generation surgical robot technology to facilitate complex medical operations with minimal incisions, such as liver tumour removal, kidney transplantation, and hysterectomy. President Director of Mandaya Hospital Group, Dr Benedictus R. Widaja, stated on Monday in Tangerang that the arrival of the Da Vinci Xi robot is part of the hospital’s commitment to strengthening innovation-based healthcare services in the country. The stability of the robot’s arms, equipped with tremor-filtration technology, can eliminate unintentional movements by surgical instruments, allowing surgical procedures inside the patient’s body to proceed very safely. “With the presence of this cutting-edge technology, Indonesians no longer need to travel abroad to obtain high-precision surgical services,” Dr Ben said in a statement. He further explained that with just one Da Vinci Xi robot, the medical team can perform various complex operations simultaneously. Other procedures that can be carried out include prostate removal, large intestine resection, and future development plans to perform heart bypass surgery. He noted that the technology is fully controlled by a specialist surgeon via a high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) console. The flexibility of the four robotic arms surpasses the physical limitations of two human hands, especially when performing complex actions such as holding, clamping, cutting, and suturing organs in very narrow and hard-to-reach areas of the body. The arrival of the Da Vinci Xi complements the five robotic technologies the hospital now possesses, aligning with its position as a centre for advanced robotics and precision technology in Indonesia. In the field of urology, the hospital already has Zamenix, a flexible-arm robot for treating large kidney stones without open surgery, and MonaLisa, used for prostate cancer biopsies with higher sampling accuracy. For orthopaedics, RS Mandaya Royal Puri operates CORI, a robot used in partial or total knee replacement procedures to help doctors determine the precise position of the implant based on the patient’s knee anatomy. For neurosurgery needs, a 3D Brain Neuronavigation system combined with robotic microscope alignment is available to guide doctors in locating brain tumours in real-time with submillimetre accuracy while keeping the surrounding brain tissue safe. “This entire series of robotic innovations is expected to provide more medical treatment options for patients to obtain minimally invasive procedures with high precision and support a much faster recovery process in line with the development of modern medical technology,” he said.
