Jakarta (ANTARA) - Based on the latest regulations for organising the 2026 Hajj from the Ministry of Health, there are mandatory vaccines that prospective Hajj pilgrims must receive before departing for the Holy Land. “The first is the meningococcal ACWY meningitis vaccine, which protects against meningitis that spreads easily in crowds,” said Nutrition Expert from Faletehan University in Serang, Dr. Rita Ramayulis, DCN, M.Kes, when contacted by ANTARA from Jakarta on Wednesday. The Public Health Lecturer from Faletehan University in Serang explained that the vaccine must be given at least 10 days before departure, with the certificate’s validity lasting up to five years depending on the vaccine type. In addition, the polio vaccine is also a requirement for Indonesian pilgrims. This vaccine is administered in one dose within four weeks to 12 months before departure. “This is because Indonesia is still a country under surveillance for polio cases,” she stated. Besides vaccination, Rita emphasised the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle while performing the pilgrimage. She advised pilgrims to get sufficient rest between activities and to regulate food consumption. “Choose low-risk foods, by increasing fruits and low-fat proteins, while others in moderation,” she said. She also recommended that pilgrims bring practical snacks like dates to help maintain energy during activities. “If feeling tired, consume one to three dates,” she said. In addition, pilgrims are advised to do light stretching for about 10 minutes in the morning and to regulate their walking pace to avoid rushing. Rita also reminded pilgrims not to hold in urination or thirst, as this can increase the risk of urinary tract infections. “When there is an opportunity to rest, use it for resting, and continue to maintain fluid needs,” she said. By fulfilling the vaccinations and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, pilgrims are expected to perform the Hajj rituals with optimal physical condition.
