Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — Industry Minister M Sarmuji welcomed the postponement until 2028 of mandatory halal certification for certain products. He said the extended period would give businesses, particularly small and medium-sized industries, an opportunity to prepare to meet the requirements.

“Yes, that’s good, so there is time to prepare, especially for small and medium-sized industries, giving them a longer period to get ready,” Sarmuji said at his office in Jakarta on Tuesday (20 October 2026).

He said the additional preparation time was important to allow businesses to adjust their production processes and meet halal-certification requirements before the obligation takes effect.

The delay gives small and medium-sized industries more time to prepare for certification and adapt to the applicable rules.

The adjustment is being made through an amendment to Government Regulation No. 42/2024 on the Implementation of Halal Product Assurance. Previously, several halal-certification requirements had been scheduled to take effect on 18 October 2026.

Susiwijono Moegiarso, secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, said the extended transition period was needed to ensure the requirements could be implemented effectively while taking into account the readiness of all parties involved.

“Taking into account the readiness of the halal ecosystem, the Government is extending the phased introduction of mandatory halal certification through a Government Regulation amending Government Regulation No. 42/2024,” Susiwijono said at a briefing on policies relating to mandatory halal certification.

One adjustment concerns the halal-certification requirement for micro and small enterprises (MSEs). The transition period for certification of food, beverages, slaughtered products and slaughtering services has been extended until 17 October 2028.

The requirement for these businesses will therefore come into force on 18 October 2028.
