Mandala Krida Corruption Case Unresolved, Erick Thohir Helps Bridge Communication with KPK
Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) and Chairman of PSSI, Erick Thohir, has highlighted the incomplete facilities at Mandala Krida Stadium, as its renovation remains hindered by an unresolved corruption case. One point of particular concern is the absence of stadium floodlights.
“It’s a shame (there are no adequate lighting facilities), because the stadium itself is good,” Erick said when met at Mandala Krida Stadium in Yogyakarta City on Wednesday (8/7/2026).
Erick said he had opened discussions with the regional government on the matter. He explained that the central government is trying to bridge communication with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) so that the stadium’s infrastructure can be completed in accordance with legal provisions.
“But I have already spoken with the regional government. There are several issues with the KPK that we will need to work out, so that the infrastructure built earlier by the regional government can continue to be improved bit by bit,” he said.
According to Erick, resolving the legal status is essential. Once the legal status is clear, renovation work and the addition of supporting facilities can proceed.
“So if there is new investment such as lighting and so on, at the very least there is a legal basis for it, because there was previously a case here — I heard it was mentioned earlier. Certainly, we from the central government will try to bridge matters between the regional government’s involvement and the KPK,” he asserted.
The case began when the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) found evidence of collusion in the Mandala Krida Stadium construction project for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. KPPU ruling No. 10/KPPU-I/2017, concerning an alleged violation of Article 22 of Law No. 5/1999 on the Prohibition of Monopolistic Practices and Unfair Business Competition, was read out at a hearing at the Marriott Hotel Yogyakarta on Tuesday (18/12/2018).
The parties reported were: Respondent I, Edy Wahyudi, as the Commitment-Making Officer (PPK) for construction services procurement/building purchases for the Mandala Krida Stadium construction under the 2016 regional budget, and PPK for construction services procurement for the Mandala Krida Stadium construction under the 2017 regional budget for youth and sports facilities; Respondent II, the Procurement Service Working Group (POKJA BLP) at the Youth and Sports Office of the Yogyakarta Special Region Education, Youth and Sports Agency in 2016; and Respondent III, the POKJA BLP at the same office in 2017.
Respondents IV to IX were contractor companies: PT Duta Mas Indah, PT Kenanga Mulya, PT Lima Tujuh Tujuh, PT Bimapatria Pradanaraya, PT Permata Nirwana Nusantara, and PT Eka Madra Sentosa.
The KPK subsequently named three suspects in the alleged corruption case surrounding the 2016-2017 renovation of Mandala Krida Stadium in Yogyakarta: Edy Wahyudi, Sugiharto, and Heri Sukamto.
The suspects’ actions are alleged to have caused state financial losses of approximately Rp 31.7 billion.
The Yogyakarta Special Region government, through its Education, Youth and Sports Agency (Disdikpora), wrote to the KPK in July 2025 regarding the legal status of Mandala Krida, in the hope that the stadium could be renovated in 2026.
KPK Chairman Setyo Budiyanto said that although Mandala Krida remains an asset seized by the KPK, any party wishing to use the stadium may submit a request to the commission.
“Oh yes, if that is indeed the case, there will certainly be a process, because it has been confiscated, meaning its status is still that of seized property. But if it is genuinely needed and so forth, a request can certainly be submitted,” Setyo explained when met at the Kepatihan complex in Yogyakarta City on Tuesday (28/10/2025).
