Management Investigates Explosion at Cilegon Chemical Plant

Dimas Saputro, Public Relations for PT MCCI, stated the explosion occurred around 12.30 WIB. The company’s internal team is still investigating the location and cause of the blast. ‘Indeed, at 12.30pm today, an incident occurred at our facility, and we are currently investigating. Details will be provided later,’ Dimas said in Cilegon on Monday (26 May 2026). The explosion was audible up to three kilometres from the site and caused a strong odour. The company claimed the white smoke was steam from a turbine. ‘I tried coordinating internally to understand why it rose so high. The white smoke was reportedly steam from our turbine,’ he said. The company is still investigating the incident internally, with technical teams and authorities including the police and the Environmental Agency involved. ‘Details will be shared in due course. I need to confirm with the technical team. It seems it was a one-off event at 12.30pm involving steam,’ he added.
