Manado faces garbage problem

MANADO, North Sulawesi: The city is overwhelmed by growing mounds of garbage, Mayor L.H. Korah lamented yesterday.

"We have taken a lot of trouble to try to cope with the city garbage, but we don't have enough sanitation crews," Korah was quoted by Antara as saying.

He said the municipality only has 10 garbage trucks which are still in operation. The other five are beyond repair.

The city produces 100,000 meter squares of garbage a day, a burden that requires at least 40 trucks and crews, he said.

He called on the public to help the administration ease the garbage problem. He said that an Australian company has expressed interests in managing the city's sanitation services. (16)
