Man Who Extorted Bajaj Driver in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, Arrested by Police
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — A man who extorted a bajaj driver in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, on Saturday (11/4/2026) has been arrested by police.
“Yes (he has been arrested). He has been brought to the police station and his statement has been taken,” said Tanah Abang Police Chief AKBP Dhimas Prasetyo when confirmed by Kompas.com on Monday (13/4/2026).
The man’s face had appeared in a viral video of the extortion of the bajaj driver that circulated over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the location of the other extortion perpetrator is still being investigated and sought.
Police are still examining the sanctions against the one arrested extortionist.
When asked further about the evaluation of security in the Tanah Abang area following the viral extortion incident over two consecutive days, Dhimas stated that he would conduct patrols with relevant parties.
“We are coordinating with relevant parties such as the sub-district and Satpol PP, as well as the Transportation Agency, to carry out joint patrols in areas prone to extortion,” said Dhimas.
The patrols are intended to enable all relevant parties to prevent extortion before it occurs.
It was previously reported that a video showing a bajaj driver allegedly being extorted by two men in the Tanah Abang area went viral on social media on Saturday (11/4/2026).
In the video, the bajaj driver admitted that he had to pay up to Rp 100,000 per day to avoid intimidation.
Based on a post from the Instagram account @jakarta.terkini, it mentioned suspected thuggery using the modus operandi of daily protection money against bajaj drivers in Tanah Abang.
In the video, the bajaj driver is initially seen handing something from his bag to a man wearing a black T-shirt, khaki trousers, and a black cap.
The man then walks away while carrying the item.
