A man identified by his initials SD (25) suffered burn injuries after being electrocuted while attempting to steal cables from a state electricity company (PLN) substation on Jalan Agung Karya, Sunter Agung, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Thursday.

“The perpetrator is a victim and is currently receiving medical treatment at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital,” said Tanjung Priok Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head AKP Handam Samudro in Jakarta on Thursday.

He stated that the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon around 4 p.m. local time when the perpetrator entered the PLN substation on Jalan Agung Karya, Sunter Agung, to steal cables inside the facility.

Upon reaching the interior of the substation, the suspected perpetrator, spotting the cables he intended to steal, attempted to climb onto the electrical installations. Suddenly, the perpetrator was thrown back by an electric shock from the substation’s installations.

“The perpetrator was thrown and fell, sustaining burn injuries,” Handam said.

Upon receiving information from the public, the on-duty Criminal Investigation Unit immediately went to the scene and secured the suspected perpetrator.

The perpetrator was immediately taken to Tanjung Priok Hospital for medical treatment. However, due to the severity of the burns suffered by the victim, he was referred to the Police Hospital in Kramat Jati.

“The perpetrator suffered burns covering 70 percent of his body and is currently receiving intensive care at the hospital,” he said.
