Man shot to death by police

JAKARTA: Police shot and killed an alleged criminal on Monday, identified as Rhamdoni, 29, at the vicinity of the Kramat Jati market in East Jakarta.

Rhamdoni was shot in the chest and head while attempting to grab a police officer's rifle in a desperate bid to escape. He died at the scene.

"Police fired warning shots, but he refused to surrender," the police report said.

Rhamdoni was known as a hoodlum who often threatened either the buyers or the sellers at the market, the report said.

He was in police custody at the time, having been taken by police to the scene so that he could identify his fellow criminals in the area, the report stated. --JP
