Man Sets Himself on Fire Outside UN Headquarters in New York

An extreme protest action has occurred in the world’s diplomatic heart. A man reportedly set himself on fire in front of the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, United States, after waving the flag of the Tibetan government-in-exile on the pavement near the scene.

According to local media reports and widely circulated social media videos, the incident took/occurred on Thursday (2/7) evening at 19:00 local time. The location was near the intersection of East 43rd Street and First Avenue.

Based on UN CCTV footage, the perpetrator was initially seen firmly planting a flag into the pavement before ultimately setting himself on fire. Security personnel acted swiftly to evacuate the victim to Bellevue Hospital. The man is currently reported to be in critical condition.

At the scene, police also discovered several leaflets containing harsh political demands, one of which urged that “China must leave Tibet”. New York police have cordoned off the area and have commenced a thorough investigation into the motive and the identity of the perpetrator.

The flag planted by the man was identified as a symbol of historical resistance related to the failed 1959 uprising against the Chinese government. Following the 1959 incident, the Tibetan government-in-exile was officially established in Northern India.

This geopolitical conflict remains one of the oldest sensitive issues in Asia. The Tibet region has been under full control of Beijing since 1951, where Chinese authorities claim the takeover of the territory was a step of “peaceful liberation”. Beijing firmly does not recognise the government-in-exile and maintains that Tibet has been an integral part of China since the 13th century.

Conversely, the Dalai Lama, as the spiritual leader of Tibet, has consistently asserted that Tibet was a sovereign and independent nation before the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) entered the region.
