Man kills own son during family feud

JAKARTA (JP): Makasar Police in the city's east have arrested a 64-year-old man for allegedly killing his delinquent son to protect his wife and daughter.

The victim, Muhammad Nurdin, 24, died after being stabbed in the right side of his chest and slashed across the right arm and left shoulder.

According to one of the family's neighbors, M. Ardani, the incident occurred during a fight late Saturday between the father and his eldest son at their house in Kampung Dukuh in Kramat Jati.

Nurdin, who was jobless after being released from jail and was known for his bad temper, asked his mother for Rp 10,000 (US$1.95) to watch a New Year's Eve dangdut music show at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Ardani said.

"Nurdin was only given Rp 5,000 which had made him mad," Ardani told reporters yesterday at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.

"He then threatened to hurt his younger sister and kill his mother if his parents did not meet his demands."

The man's father, Baddarudin, who overheard the conflict, took a big kitchen knife and threatened Nurdin with it, Ardani said.

"Baddarudin asked Nurdin to leave the house immediately but his son disobeyed."

Nurdin even tried to grab the knife off his father. But Baddarudin reacted quickly and slashed Nurdin across shoulder, he said.

The scuffle lasted several minutes with Baddarudin finally stabbing Nurdin in the chest.

Nurdin passed away an hour later at Cipto hospital. His father had several wounds on the palms of his hands and face.

"His father, a low-class trader, is being detained at Makasar Police subprecinct."

Ardani said that Baddarudin's wife had asked him to represent the family at the hospital and bury Nurdin's body so they did not have to bring the corpse home.

Nurdin was buried yesterday in Penggilingan Baru Public Cemetery in East Jakarta. (04)
