A man with the initials AC fabricated a police report, claiming he was a victim of a robbery in Cengkareng, West Jakarta. It was later revealed that the robbery report was a hoax devised by AC to claim insurance for his laptop.

The case began when AC visited a police station and filed a report on 22 July 2026. At the time, AC explained to the police that he had been robbed on Jalan Kampung Malang, Cengkareng Barat.

In his report, AC stated that his bag, containing Rp1 million in cash and a Lenovo Legion laptop, was seized by the robber. AC claimed to have suffered a total loss of Rp27.3 million.

‘In the report, he also claimed to have suffered a stab wound to his left arm as a result of resisting the perpetrator,’ said the Head of the Resmob Unit of the West Jakarta Metro Police Criminal Investigation Department, AKP George Ruben AY, in a statement on Friday (24/7/2026).

The Resmob Unit of the West Jakarta Metro Police Criminal Investigation Department subsequently conducted an investigation by processing the crime scene and taking statements from witnesses and the complainant, AC, as well as gathering other evidence. However, the investigation uncovered several inconsistencies, eventually revealing the fact that AC had filed a false report.

‘We, the Resmob Unit of the West Jakarta Metro Police, handled the report of alleged violent theft. After conducting an in-depth investigation, it turned out the incident was not true. The victim reported to the police that he had been robbed, but after we investigated further, the event was merely a fabricated story,’ he explained.

For the Sake of a Laptop Insurance Claim

Upon examination, AC admitted to filing a false report in order to submit an insurance claim to the financing company. It was discovered that AC purchased the laptop on an instalment plan through a financing company.

‘The laptop is worth around Rp27.3 million and only about five instalments had been paid. Based on the police report stating he was a robbery victim, the complainant intended to file a claim with the financing company so that the laptop instalments could be stopped,’ he added.

During questioning, AC admitted he was desperate to fabricate the report because he felt burdened by the laptop instalments.

‘The main motive was to obtain an insurance claim so he would no longer be burdened by the laptop instalments,’ he stated.

Laptop Was Being Serviced in Mangga Dua

Police also revealed another fact. It turned out AC’s laptop was never stolen, but was instead being serviced in the Mangga Dua area.

‘This fact is corroborated by a service receipt and proof of purchase that were successfully verified by investigators,’ he said.

AC’s claim of suffering a stab wound during the robbery was also disproven. He later admitted that he deliberately injured his arm with scissors to convince the police that he had been robbed.

As a form of accountability for his actions, AC subsequently visited the West Jakarta Metro Police to make a clarification video and retract the police report he had previously filed. In his clarification video, AC apologised to the Indonesian National Police, particularly the ranks of the Cengkareng Police and the West Jakarta Metro Police.
