Man in Tomang, West Jakarta stabbed while asleep, 100 stitches
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Gunawan (33) said he was attacked by two unidentified men in his boarding-room at Jalan Tomang Utara I, Grogol Petamburan, West Jakarta, on the night of Wednesday (20 May 2026). Gunawan was attacked while he was fast asleep. As a result, he had to endure more than 100 stitches to his head, hands and waist. Gunawan appeared not to be wearing a shirt because the wounds on his waist and head were wrapped in bandages. ‘The attack was brutal. There were several wounds on the head and arms, perhaps nine slashes,’ he told Kompas.com on Thursday. However, Gunawan did not want to undergo surgery because he was worried he could not pay the hospital costs which were estimated to reach hundreds of millions. In the end, he only received treatment consisting of stitches and prescribed medicines from the doctor. ‘I’m only undergoing outpatient treatment, I’m not brave enough, afraid I won’t be able to pay if I was admitted (to hospital). Yesterday alone, if I were operated on it would cost up to Rp 150 million, so this is just being stitched,’ he said. Gunawan said the assault happened very quickly because the two attackers suddenly kicked in his room door and immediately began slashing. ‘I was asleep. I woke up, he (the attacker) kicked the door. He came in and immediately slashed me with that machete,’ he said. Sensing his life was at risk, Gunawan forced himself to fight back. He struggled repeatedly to find a gap to escape. ‘I fought back here, inside the room. He slash-slash me in the room. I ran, I fought back a little. I became distracted, I ran. The situation was already full of slashes, my face was covered in blood,’ he said. Fortunately, a nearby workshop mechanic bravely approached and gave him first aid before he was taken to hospital.
