Man in Siak Injured After Being Attacked by Sumatran Tiger While Defecating

A man named Harianto (31) was injured after being mauled by a Sumatran tiger in Sungai Apit, Siak Regency, Riau. At the time, the victim was about to relieve himself near the camp where he worked.

According to detikSumut on Wednesday (22/7/2026), the victim worked as a technical helper for land-clearing and canal construction equipment. He was attacked by the tiger after leaving the camp to relieve himself at around 7.30pm local time on Tuesday (21/7).

Only about ten minutes after leaving the camp towards the canal, the victim suddenly screamed. Colleagues who heard the screams immediately went out of the camp to search for Harianto, but could not find him.

In the dark, the victim’s colleagues then started the heavy machinery engines and turned on all the lights for illumination. It was then that the tiger was seen mauling the victim, and it immediately released its bite.

After the tiger fled, the victim was rushed to the auxiliary community health centre (Puskesmas Pembantu) in Kampung Teluk Lanus. After initial treatment, he was referred to Tengku Rafian Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Siak.

Contacted separately, the Head (Camat) of Sungai Apit subdistrict, Tengku Muhtasar, confirmed the news. The victim sustained injuries from the Sumatran tiger attack.

“The incident happened at around 7.30pm local time. The victim survived, but lost a lot of blood and has been referred to Tengku Rafian Regional General Hospital. He is already on the way,” said Tengku Muhtasar.
