Man in Ciputat Burns Self While Grilling Satay After Pouring Petrol on Charcoal

A 29-year-old man identified as DF suffered burns while attempting to grill satay in Ciputat Timur, South Tangerang (Tangsel). The victim was engulfed in flames after pouring petrol onto charcoal.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, in Ciputat Timur. DF, who was renting a second-floor unit, was preparing to light a charcoal grill for qurban meat distribution.

“The victim purchased one litre of Pertalite petrol from a 24-hour convenience store in front of his rental, placed in a plastic bag,” said Ciputat Timur Police Chief Kompol Bambang Askar in a statement on Thursday, 28 May.

DF then used a fan to ignite the charcoal grill. As the charcoal embers were not burning sufficiently, he poured petrol onto them.

“The flames then engulfed the victim’s body. He screamed for help, and locals extinguished the fire on his person,” he added.

According to witness accounts, the incident caused 20% burns to the victim, who is currently receiving medical treatment and has been referred to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital.
